Zee Avi in the Chapel of the First Unitarian Church 11/08/2009
Malaysian born Zee Avi started posting videos on Youtube of herself singing for a friend, she never thought Patrick Keeler of The Raconteurs would watch them. Turns out, he did and liked her a lot. He urged the label he was on, Monotone, to sign her… they did. Eventually, her debut album went on to be co-released by Monotone and Jack Johnson’s label, Brushfire Records. Now only 23, Zee Avi has made quite a name for herself and has acquired a dedicated following. Dedicated enough that a fan drove 10-hours from Michigan to Philadelphia just to see her.
Zee Avi played the super intimate, 50 person chapel at the First Unitarian Church last night. People piled into the pews and the aisle drinking red wine out of cups and beers in browmbags to watch her play her acoustic tunes. She held herself well next to her drummer, Patrick Keeler. A pleasant surprise to the night was her cover of Interpol’s “Slow Hands”. Her beautiful voice accompanied the acoustic guitar and minimal bass and drums flawlessly. Keep an eye out for her, she’s definitely on her way to becoming more than a Youtube sensation. Photos and a really dark/good audio video of “Slow Hands” below.
