Editors, The Antlers at Trocadero Theatre 02/20/2010
Two bands from opposite sides of the Atlantic played the Trocadero Theatre last night. English band Editors headlined the show while Brooklyn trio, The Antlers, opened the show. The Antlers have come a long way since releasing their steller debut record, Hospice. They went from playing a small gig at the M Room to opening for a band that has sold over 2 million albums at the Troc. Pretty impressive, if you ask me. They’ll be back again in June with The National.
Editors are on tour in support of their newest record, In This Light and on This Evening. They also contributed a tune to the soundtrack of the teeny bop sensation, New Moon. I had a chance to talk to Editors‘ bass player, Russell recently so check back in the next few days for that. We talk the new record, tour and football(soccer). Photos of last night’s show last night.

MONO releasing live album/DVD + playing First Unitarian Church in June
“Last spring MONO flew from Japan to New York City to perform two truly magical, memorable nights with esteemed Wordless Music Orchestra backing them. The 30-piece MONO played a 90-minute set that ranks among the greatest live experiences we’ve ever witnessed. What most people don’t know is we flew our producer friend Matt Bayles to record the concerts, and the whole glorious event was filmed by a team of poorly-paid superfriends. It all sounds and looks absolutely stunning, and we’re so thrilled with how it all turned out. There will be a CD+DVD, as well as a limited-edition 3xLP+DVD with all the bells and whistles you could hope for. Look for the pre-order to begin here on March 1!” – Temporary Residence Limited

Along with the release of their live album/DVD, MONO will go on an extensive world tour. The band will tour most of Europe and play a one off show before they head to North America for two months. Their tour will stop at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia on Tuesday, June 1st. If you have never seen them before, make sure to prepare yourself for a very loud and mind-blowing performance. Definitely worth your while to check them out.
Tickets for the show can be found HERE. Scottish band The Twilight Sad will open all shows on the North American leg of the tour. (All tour dates below.)
Sidenote: I conducted an interview with Taka, guitarists/songwriter from MONO, for The Calcutta Blog with a friend. Check it out HERE.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra release new LP +announce show in the Sanctuary
“Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra(SMZ) returns with its sixth full-length recording and first since the band’s line-up change in summer 2008. Having shed three members and recruited a new drummer, the group officially dropped the “Tra-La-La Band’ from its name, played a debut performance as a newly minted quintet at All Tomorrow’s Parties in upstate NY, and embarked on an extensive European tour through the Fall of 2008. As Kollaps Tradixionales ably demonstrates, the band has lost none of its raw and frazzled anthemic power and continues to forge bold new ground in its search for a unique hybrid of punk, blues, psych, folk and modern orchestral idioms.” -Constellation Records

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra new record Kollaps Tradixionales was released this past Tuesday(02/16) via Constellations Records. Along with the release they announced a string of May US tourdates. Their website read, “U!S!A! U!S!A! U!S!A!———> (short one for now, but more in the fall.) this is us in may= boston, nyc, philadelphia, baltimore, d.c., asheville, chapel hill, atlanta, nashville, louisville, chicago, detroit.”
The tour will stop at the Sancutuary of First Unitarian Church on Monday, May 17th. Tickets for the show go on sale tomorrow(02/19) and they can be found HERE. (MP3 download and all tour dates below)

Dr. Dog, Kurt Vile to play UPenn’s Rotunda in March

Kurt Vile at Johnny Brendas last month.
According to a recent article UPenn’s paper The Daily Pennsylvanian, Philly favorite locals Dr. Dog and Kurt Vile will play Upenn’s Rotunda on Tuesday, March 2nd(via Phrequency). The Rotunda is a very small, intimate venue that plays host to an assortment of events. The most recent musical act to play there was The Antlers last October. It’s a great venue to see a relatively big band up-close and personal.
The UPenn Social Planning and Events Committee (Jazz and Grooves) were the ones who decided on the two artists for their annual spring concert. Cheers to the committee for consistently bringing excellent acts(Temple University’s committee could learn a thing or two from them, just saying). Tickets for the show go on sale next Monday(02/22) on Locust Walk(37th and Locust Street). They’re 5 dollars and will be available until the date of the show. Hopefully, Upenn opens this show up to the public. We’ll keep you updated on that status.
In related news, Dr. Dog will released their new LP entitled Shame Shame on April 6th with a national tour to follow. The tour makes a stop at Electric Factory in May.
In other news, Kurt Vile & the Violators will play tomorrow(02/17) at The Barbary with Fucked Up. Tickets for that show can be found HERE.
The Antlers added to both Philly dates of The National’s tour + show with Editors this Satuday

If you haven’t heard of The Antlers yet, you’re really missing out. They released one of the best records of 2009 in Hospice and they put on amazing live shows in support. The band will play Saturday with Editors at the Trocardero Theatre, which is a big step up from their last show in Philly at UPenn’s Rotunda.
However, the Brooklyn trio just announced via Twitter an even bigger step. They’ll open both of The National’s Philly dates in June at Electric Factory. Their very first show in Philly was last summer at the small bar/venue in Fishtown called The M Room. Less than a year later, The Antlers will play one of the biggest stages in Philadelphia. It’s only a matter of time before they are headlining the big venues around the country.
Tickets for their show with Editors can be found HERE.
Tickets for their two shows with The National can be found HERE.
Neon Indian, Memory Tapes play Making Time at Voyeur on Friday

Neon Indian
Download: Neon Indian – Terminally Chill
Two electronica style style artists will play Making Time at Voyeur Nightclub this Friday(02/19). Austin indie kid Neon Indian, who put out a very well received debut record in 2009, will start the night off. He also just got a shout out from Questlove the other day via Twitter. His set then makes way to the semi- local dude from South Jersey know as Memory Tapes. He’s a guy, who has been putting out music under different names such as Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes for quite some time now. On his new project, he mixed the two different styles from his previous pseudo-names into one. Hence, the reason he mashed the names as well.
The lineup and environment of the club guarantees that it will be one big dance party. There’s really no other way to describe it. Definitely a great way to spend your Friday night into Saturday morning. Tickets for the show can be be found HERE.
Roadtrip: Bonnaroo 2010

Head over to Bonnaroo’s Myspace page to watch them announce the line up live. It will be going on all day until 9pm. So far they have announced Phoenix, Regina Spektor, Jay Z, Wale, Weezer, The xx and many more. We’ll update later with the full list of artists.
“For the first time ever, tickets will go back on sale the same day as the announcement. The top two tiers of tickets sold out quickly during our Holiday pre-sale in December, so make sure to act fast. Payment plans will once again be offered for both GA and VIP tickets.
The festival will be held from June 10-13, 2010 on our beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. Get ready for an amazing four-day weekend with more than 150 of your favorite bands, top comedians, art, activities, workshops, vendors and much more.” via Bonnaroo

If you miss out on the presale, tickets go on sale to the public this Friday(02/12).
