Interpol cancel all but 4 dates on US mini tour

Interpol announced a few weeks ago a mini US tour at small, intimate venues which coincided with their shows with U2. However, after Bono‘s back injury that led to the postponement of their North American tour, it also forced Interpol to cancel the majority of their shows. They canceled all but four of them. One of which is the Allentown show. So that’s good news for us Philadelphians! (Details and all tour dates below)
“Good day to you all.
Unfortunately, due to the postponement of the upcoming U2 US dates, Interpol has had to rework its summer tour schedule.
With the exception of four shows, we have had to cancel our announced dates. Shows in Rochester, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Allentown will be happening. The rest of the shows will be rescheduled. If you have purchased tickets for a cancelled date, please contact the “point of purchase” and get a full refund.
We lament the change in plans, apologize for the inconvenience, and assure you that we’ll do you right – when the time is right and the light is nice.”

RIP Gary Coleman
RIP Gary Colman
“Gary Coleman has died as the result of injuries he suffered earlier this week, the hospital tells TMZ. We’re told Coleman died at 12:05 PM Mountain Standard Time. He died of a intracranial hemorrhage. Family members and close friends were at Coleman’s side when life support was pulled. He was 42. As TMZ first reported, Coleman was rushed to a hospital in Utah after he fell and hurt his head. He was on life support since Thursday. There will be a press conference at the hospital at 3:00 PM PT.”
-TMZ
“Coleman was born in Zion, Illinois. He was adopted by Edmonia Sue, a nurse practitioner, and W.G. Coleman, a fork-lift operator.[2] He suffered from a congenital kidney disease caused by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (an autoimmune destruction and alteration of the kidney), which halted his growth at an early age, leading to a small stature (4 ft 8 in; 1.42 m). He underwent two kidney transplants, one in 1973 and one in 1984, and required daily dialysis.
On May 26, 2010, Coleman was admitted to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah, after falling and hitting his head[9] and suffering an intracranial hemorrhage at his home outside of Salt Lake City, UT. He was announced to be in critical condition.[10] By mid-afternoon on May 27, 2010, Coleman was unconscious and on life support.[11] On May 28, 2010, it was announced that he was still unconscious and on life support.[12] Coleman died in the afternoon of the same day.[13][14]

Tokyo Police Club: ‘Breakneck Speed’ video, new album + Mann Center show w/Passion Pit
Tokyo Police Club have a new record, Champ, coming out June 1st via XL Recordings. It’ll be their first since 2008′s debut record, Elephant Shell. Aside from that, the band have a ton of tour dates coming up solo and with Passion Pit. One of those dates with Passion Pit will be at the Mann Center in August. It’s going to be one those ideal summertime shows that will no doubt be a highlight of the summer. Tokyo Police Club recently made a video for their single “Breakneck Speed”, check it out below. The song has the same feel as every Tokyo Police Club song. Looks like the band had a good time filming the video too.
Update on Bill 100267
As we mentioned before, there is a bill being tossed around at City Hall that could jeopardize Philadelphia’s music scene and make the lives of promoters very difficult or even force them to relocate. They have made some progress since the bill was first introduced. You can read more about it below.
Also, you can still voice your opposition to this pointless bill by signing a petition HERE. Or you can send a pre-written email to the three officials (Darrell Clarke, Bill Greenlee and Anna Verna) who are supporting the bill HERE via Philly Metal. Lastly, you can also write a letter, send your own email or give them a call. All their contact information can be found HERE.
“Enter Patrick Rodgers — he of Dracula’s Ball and Dancing Ferret booking and management fame. He offered to help Councilman Greenlee’s staff work on specific language for a bill that would address the concerns of the police department without crippling the city’s music and entertainment industries. They accepted the offer and scheduled a meeting for Wednesday to try hashing out some preliminary language.
“My hope is that we wind up with essentially a new bill,” Rodgers says. The first good news was that initial hearing for the bill has been moved. The June 1 L&I Committee meeting was canceled due to scheduling conflict, and, Rodgers says, “No new hearing date has been set, but they have to have a meeting so I’m sure it will be soon-ish.”
Even better, as of last night, Rodgers’ meeting with Greenlee’s people led officially to the 30-day permit rule and the 10-day cancellation rule being taken off the table.
“It’s dead, no longer part of the legislation,” says Rodgers. “We are making significant progress on other areas of concern. I go back tomorrow to work at it some more. I am optimistic that we will wind up with a bill that empowers police to go after unsafe events while not disturbing the commerce or culture of legitimate events. Anything can happen in politics, of course, but for right now, I feel that our concerns are being heard and addressed.”

Braids–a new band from Montreal
Braids is a young, new band out of Montreal. They recently just toured with Holly Miranda, who was just here the other day. Unfortunately, the band left her tour the day before she made a stop in Philadelphia. They also did a Take Away Show with the brilliant Vincent Moon for La Blogotheque. It was a part of his Views Of Montreal series. It can be seen below. Their debut record does not have a release date yet, but it will be released soon. Once it does get released, Braids will hit the road for a more extensive tour. In terms of what their music sounds like, think Animal Collective with a female singer, a tad less electronics and a little more poppy. Keep an eye out for this band.

Free Energy: two Philly shows + MP3 downloads

These four guys moved from St. Paul, MN to Philadelphia, PA in order to start a new life and see where it takes them. They’re called Free Energy. Their music has a Wilcoish, glam rock, 80′s vibe to it. A combo I never thought I would put into to work but I just did. The band’s debut album, Stuck On Nothing, was released via DFA Records/Astralwerks earlier this month and it was produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. Check out the downloads below to have a listen.
Free Energy‘s summer tour stops in Philly tomorrow with two shows.. one of which is FREE. They’ll play WXPN‘s Free-at-noon at the World Cafe Live. You can RSVP your spot HERE or just show up. Later that night, they will headline a show at the First Unitarian Church with Jukebox the Ghost and Miniature Tigers. It’s not sold out yet so get your tickets HERE.

Holly Miranda at Kung Fu Necktie 05/25/2010
Holly Miranda resides in Brooklyn but she certainly does not produce the typical hipster lo-fi music that comes from the borough nowadays. Even though she may be a hipster, Holly has a strong, soulful voice backed by music that is far from lo-fi-esque.
On her debut LP The Magicians Private Library, there are horns, guest vocals with a polished off feel to it. Her live performance last night at Kung Fu Necktie was a more stripped down version of that. She did not have horns nor did she have members of TV on the Radio singing back up. In reality without all that, Holly‘s music translated much better live than it does on record. The music was more grittier and her voice had more power behind it that just blew the audience away.
Her bandmates helped solidify the performance. The drummer and second guitarist were extraordinary while her bass player was just mediocre. Holly herself can really play the shit out of the guitar. Her and her band played most of her debut record including a covers of her former band Jealous Girlfriends and Yoko Ono‘s “Nobody Sees Me Like You Do”.
More people than a half packed Kung Fu Necktie should have witnessed her show last night. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before Ms. Miranda gets the recognition she deserves. Photos below.
