Weathervane presents: Shaking Through with Big Troubles “Phantom”

leave a comment »

Our good friends over at Weathervane Music released another episode of their Shaking Through series featuring Big Troubles. They’re a North Jersey band that never had a chance to do a proper recording until they spent the day at Miner Street Studios in Fishtown. The result of that session was “Phantom.” A multi-layered fuzzy guitar song with reverby vocals. Check it out below.

Yes Nice “Horses” video

leave a comment »

I don’t know much about this band, but Yes Nice released a video for their song “Horses” the other day. YVYNYL brought this Canadian band to my attention and I couldn’t resist posting this. It’s a fun and colorful video that makes me want dress up like the Lost Boys from Peter Pan and run through a forest. Check it out below.

Interview with Peter Silberman from the Antlers

with 2 comments

A few weeks ago Peter Silberman from The Antlers was in Philly for Weathervane’s Fundraiser Event where he performed along side his childhood friend Nick Principe aka Port St Willow. It was all caught on film so if you weren’t there, you’ll be able to check that out soon. Silberman and his bandmates just released their sophomore(well, technically their fourth) album Burst Apart last week and they’re about to hit the road in support. They play the beautiful Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church this Wednesday(05/20) and tickets are still available. Don’t miss out on this show.

While he was in town, I was able to sit down with Peter for a quick conversation about dining on tour, Burst Apart, Soul Town and more. Check out our conversation below.

First question is.. why is Soul Train so fucking awesome? (He tweeted a few days before about Soul Town.. I’m an idiot.)

Soul train.. It’s actually SoulTown that we mentioned.

Ah, Soul Town! I’m sorry.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong. Soul Train was awesome and I absolutely watched it on Saturday mornings when I was a kid. Soul Town is a Sirius radio station that plays all soul music. Every single song they play just happens to be really amazing. We discovered this on tour with Au Revoir Simone a couple years ago. I think we rented a mini van, back when we were touring in a mini van. It had a satellite radio built in and we just put that on and listened to it the whole tour. It’s incredible. I was Twittering about it cause we were in Atlanta, we rented a mini-van and it had a satellite radio thing in there. It keeps happening every once and while, we just get to listen to soul town and we are all really happy.

The Rosebuds going on tour with Bon Iver(Tower Theatre) + releasing new album “Loud Planes Fly Low”

leave a comment »

One time married couple, The Rosebuds, who are now just friends/bandmates are set to release their fifth album Loud Planes Fly Low via Merge Records on June 7th. Their marriage ended after their last album, which left the future of the band in quite a limbo. However, they pulled together and made the record which strengthened their relationship as bandmates and most importantly, their friendship. The music allowed them to have the conversations about their relationship that they long avoided. In the end, the duo made a record that’s considered to be their most inventive album to date. Check out a song and a trailer for the album below.

A few months after the album’s release, the band will head out on the road for a string of dates opening for Bon Iver. One of which will be at the Tower Theatre on Wednesday, August 3rd. Tickets for the show go on sale this Friday, May 13th and will be found HERE.

James Blake played a sold-out show at the First Unitarian Church last night(videos)

James Blake @ the First Unitarian Church last night – see more photos by Michael James Murray

James Blake played a sold-out First Unitarian Church last night on his first tour of the US. He was originally suppose to play Johnny Brenda’s in Fishtown, but once that show sold out in a few hours, R5 Production promptly moved it to the church.

LA based Active Child opened the show with a stellar set of electronic drums, bass, and keyboards. Leadman/songwriter Pat Grossi actually grew up in the Philly area and even gave his mom, who was in attendance, a Mother’s Day shout out since he missed it the day before. His music reminded me of James Blake‘s in the sense that it was very electo based, yet majestic and gospel like. You can check out a recent Daytrotter session he did HERE.

By the time Blake took the stage, the venue was packed and started to get a pretty hot, which is expected on any given spring/summer night in the basement of the church. With his music, one would wish the crowd could respect it, but a good amount of them didn’t. They were loud and talkative throughout his set(particularly stage left), it was a bummer.

Despite that though, James Blake was still able to captivate the crowd and leave them in joyous state after the show. He played a handful of songs off his debut including “Wilhelms Scream”, “I Never Learnt To Show” and a beautiful rendition of Feist’s “Limit To Your Love”. On a few songs, he and his band stemmed away from the original structure and jammed a bit. At the end of the set, Blake seemed to be completely awestruck by the response he received from the Philly crowd and was at a lost for words  as he walked off stage.

Blake claimed he never usually did encores, however,  after the crowd gave him such an enormous applause and chanted “Encore! Encore!”, he emerged for one more song. He performed a solo version of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case Of You” and it was the absolute perfect closer to the night. Hopefully this guy comes back around again, perhaps he’ll play upstairs in the Sanctuary of the Church(fingers crossed). Below are a few videos from a few Youtubers that were in attendance as well.
